Keynote Speech I


Dr. Chung-Ming Kuan
Minister of the National Development Council
管中閔博士  國家發展委員會主任委員
Dr.Chung-Ming Kuan was appointed as a Minister
without Portfolio in Executive Yuan in February 2012
and became the Minister of the National Development
Council, in 2014.

Dr. Kuan received his M.A. in economics from the University of California at Davis in 1984 and his Ph.D. in the same subject from the University of California at San Diego in 1989. He has been University Chair Professor of National Taiwan University (NTU), where he teaches at the Department of Finance, since 2009.

Dr. s academic research is focused on econometric theory, financial econometrics, macroeconomic forecasting, and program evaluation. His career brought him to tenured positions at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and NTU, as well as visiting positions at University of California at San Diego, University of Southern California, Indiana University, and the National University of Singapore.

From 1999 to 2001, he was Director of the Social Science Research Center, National Science Council. In 2001, he became the youngest person ever to serve as director of the Academia s Institute of Economics, a leading economics research institution in Taiwan.

He was a member of the Executive Council, Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and President of the Taiwan Economic Association in 2003. His most recent roles include Founder and President of the Taiwan Econometric Society, Director of the Center for Research in Econometric Theory and Applications (CRETA) at NTU, Chairman of the Commerce Development Research Institute (CDRI), and Minister of the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD).

Dr. Kuan is a recipient of many academic accolades, including Distinguished Research Award from the National Science Council, Distinguished Teaching Award from National Taiwan University, and Research Achievement Award from the Ministry of Education. He was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in 2002.

Dr. Kanji Ueda

Dr. Kanji Ueda is Emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo, where he was previously a professor and director of the RACE (Research into Artifacts, Center for Engineering). He has engaged in research and teaching in several universities besides the University of Tokyo, such as Auckland University, Kanazawa University, Kobe University, Stuttgart University for about 40 years since 1972 in the fields of manufacturing engineering, emergent synthesis of complex systems, value creation modeling and service science. He has published over 400 scientific papers, also been given several best paper awards and research grants. He has been taking part in editorial boards of several international journals, and is a member of the Science Council of Japan. Dr. Kanji Ueda had been Vice President of AIST (the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan) for 4 years since April, 2009, and is now Special Adviser of the AIST. He has been also Director of the Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Technology since April 2013. Dr. Kanji Ueda is recognized with the SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal in 2013 for his innovative contribution to improving both on the process-level and system-level, and his unique focus on the interaction of manufacturing, economy and society. He was elected Vice President of CIRP (the International Academy for Production Engineering) in 2013.

Prof. Birgit Mager

Since 1995 Birgit Mager holds the first European professorship on "Service Design" at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Germany. Her numerous lectures, her publications and her projects have strongly supported the implementation of a new understanding of the economical, ecological and social function of design in the domain of services. She has taught as a guest professor all over the world and conducted research projects on Service Design for multiple public and private partners. Birgit Mager is Co-Founder and President of the International Service Design Network, editor in chief of Touchpoint, the international Journal of Service Design and founder and manager of sedes|research, the Center for Service Design Research at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne.
